Freixenet Mionetto USA completed a visit in early October to sparkling wine producers Freixenet and Segura Viudas in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Spain, a short ride from Barcelona. Team, which included Douglas MacLeod, Connecticut State Manager, DipWSET, enjoyed tours and tastings featuring the differing styles of the two Cava cellars, owned by the Henkell Freixenet Group since 2018. Freixenet is the No. 1 Cava producer globally and the No. 1 Cava importer into the U.S. MacLeod said, “We did learn that there are some significant pressures on supply of grapes for Cava production: the harvest was 35% of normal, Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel-lo for the white; Trepat and Garnacha for the Rosé.” Segura Viudas is an underwriter of Hispanic Heritage Month on WPKN community radio on 89.5 FM through Oct. 15, using its #RespectTheRoots campaign. The wines are distributed in Connecticut via Slocum & Sons.
