The Café in Westerly welcomed bartending legend and author Dale DeGroff, aka The King of Cocktails, and spirits industry veteran and Co-founder of Martingale Cognac Andy Weir for a mixology event on April 15. Part of The Café’s The Cocktail Hour series, the latest event focused on single-malt Scotch, with The Cafe’s General Manager Stephen Corrigan and Bartenders Tom Pereira and Charlie Bullis at the helm. Utilizing Port Charlotte 10 Year Single Malt Scotch and Cointreau from the Rémy Cointreau portfolio, DeGroff and Weir led guests through the creation and tasting of three classic cocktails: The Sidecar, Blood and Sand, and Penicillin. A panel discussion and educational tasting also shed light on the history of the cocktails and the selected spirits for trade guests and cocktail lovers alike. Guests enjoyed tastes of single-malt whiskeys: Port Charlotte 10 Year, Talisker 10 Year, Oban 14 Year, Balvenie 12 Year and Auchentoshan 12 Year. Master Mixologist DeGroff developed his now-iconic techniques tending bar at the legendary Rainbow Room, where in 1980 he pioneered a gourmet approach to re-creating the classic cocktails. DeGroff has since been credited with reviving the profession of bartending and setting off a cocktail explosion that continues to transform the industry. Weir co-created and executive-produced the award-winning “Raw Craft” series with Anthony Bourdain.
