For the past five years, the Newport Storm Brewery has run a “full fledge barrel aging program” to create a “gamut of sour, hoppy and dark, stout-like beers.” This method extends to its latest creation, RIèzes [ree-ez], a classic Belgian-style ale using an ancient style yeast strain. RIèzes, a copper-hued ale, offers a rich malt flavor and a mild oak scent. It was finish-aged in eight Thomas Tew Rum barrels for roughly three months. Munich malt, Belgian Special B and Belgian Candy Sugar bring forth aromas and tastes of raisin, brown sugar and caramel. Close to 150 cases of RIèzes were made and distribution began in August.
