Campari Group will acquire the Courvoisier Cognac brand from Beam Suntory for up to $1.3 billion, marking the company’s biggest acquisition to date, the company said in a news release. The deal includes an initial $1.2 billion and an earnout of up to $120 million. Courvoisier, which includes VS, VSOP and XO expressions plus upscale limited editions, will join the Bisquit & Dubouché brand in Campari’s Cognac offerings. Maison Courvoisier was founded in 1828 by Félix Courvoisier in Jarnac, the Charente region of France. Courvoisier is the youngest and most awarded of the “big four” historical Cognac houses and received the title of Official Supplier to the House of the Emperor by Napoleon III and supplied the royal courts of Europe and was the drink of choice of the Belle Époque among historic accolades. Incoming Campari CEO Matteo Fantacchiotti called it the “biggest deal in Campari Group’s history.”
