East Coast Beverage added family-owned, Westerly-based Tapped Apple Cidery & Winery to its portfolio. In 2003, John Wiedenheft III started making wine using 5-gallon carboys in his basement as a hobby, eventually using grapes from California and partnering with his son, John IV. In 2005, the pair began working with apples, adding supplemental ingredients such as cherries, elderberries and even hops in their homemade craft wines and ciders using local fruit grown in North Scituate. In 2017, the team created Tapped Apple Cidery & Winery and brought a tasting room to downtown Westerly, now serving Tapped Apple hard ciders and wines from seed to bushel to bottle. Outside of its tasting room, East Coast Beverage will now distribute year-round ciders that include First Bite, Gravenstein, Crabapple, Blueberry Vanilla, Pomegranate and Black Currant with seasonal ciders Pineapple, Passionfruit, Brown Sugar Peach and Cranberry. Wines will include Watch Hill White (dry white from apples), Cerise Noir (cherry like Pinot Noir), Pomme d’Amour (Rosé from apples) and Apple Pie (dessert wine) throughout retail and on-premise across Rhode Island.
