Westerly’s Grey Sail Brewing was awarded for its philanthropic efforts in 2020, receiving a 2021 Common Good Award during a virtual ceremony on Jan. 14. A program created through a collaboration by the Rhode Island Foundation and Rhode Island Monthly, the goal of the Common Good Awards is to recognize the philanthropic efforts of employees at businesses of all sizes in Rhode Island. The fourth annual Common Good Awards were reimagined this year to include efforts from employees at local businesses who found ways to be innovative during the pandemic while supporting their communities. Grey Sail was honored for rerouting its beer operations to produce more than 15,000 gallons of hand sanitizer during the beginning of the pandemic, which it donated to local first responders, hospitals and small businesses. The brewery also presented a check for $1,000 to the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce to be used for personal protective equipment for small businesses and the public.
