Josep Ferrer Sala, Honorary Co-chairman of Freixenet, passed away on Nov. 6 at the age of 99. Born on Oct. 19, 1925, in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Spain, Ferrer worked for more than 70 years, becoming one of the main creators of the world’s leading sparkling wine group. A member of the second generation of the founding family, Ferrer leaves an indelible mark on the history of Freixenet, a brand created in 1914 by his parents, Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolors Sala Vivé. Ferrer’s dedication and passion for cava and wine marked his time at the company, to which he contributed the modernization and internationalization of the brand. He took over from his mother and his sisters, Pilar, Carmen and Dolores, who managed to relaunch the company after the Civil War, in which they lost their father and older brother. Ferrer, who joined the company in 1947, went on to establish the Spanish sparkling wine and cava category worldwide and shaped it with his innovative spirit, making Freixenet the best-selling cava in the world.
