Serving Up: The Mom’s Old Fashioned at Mother Pizzeria

Mother Pizzeria
49 Long Wharf Mall
Newport, RI

Located in the Shops at Long Wharf in downtown Newport, Mother Pizzeria is a neighborhood restaurant led by Partners Kevin O’Donnell; Lauren Schafer; and Kyle Stamps, Executive Chef. Named after the starter in sourdough baking, known as the “mother,” the venue makes its pizza crusts from naturally fermented dough using locally sourced flour. Pizzas are baked in its Neapolitan-style pizza oven, which can be enjoyed inside or on its patio seasonally. The bar program, managed by Beverage Director Nate Hayden, features natural wines from Italy, seasonal sips and local craft brews, aperitivos and Italian cocktails, and classics with unexpected and inventive variations. This month’s featured cocktail, the Mom’s Old Fashioned, was created by Hayden. The recipe blends the flavors of rye with Plantation Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum and Clairin Communal, an agricole rhum, which lends herbaceous and earthy flavors. “When we opened Mother Pizzeria, we knew we wanted to serve a house Old Fashioned but to bring it to the seaside,” Hayden said.

“I’ve always loved split-base cocktails, so here we mix the classic rye whiskey with a couple of our favorite rums: Plantation Pineapple and Clairin Communal, an agricole rhum out of Haiti,” Beverage Director Nate Hayden said. “At Mother, we believe in having fun while also taking our craft seriously, and this cocktail is a great example of that.”
