The rise in sales of premium and super-premium distilled spirits is occurring in every segment of the beverage alcohol industry, but the consumer is drinking less, according to the Beverage Information & Insights Group’s 2014 Liquor Handbook. The report shows an overall slower sales growth, with the industry posting a gain of just 2.2% by volume to end 2013 at 210 million 9-liter cases. Although the industry overall experienced diminished growth, most of the individual distilled spirits categories experienced upticks, a few exceptions were blended whiskey, gin and prepared cocktails. Spending habits in restaurants and bars showed a decrease in volume but modest increase in dollars.
